Do it Today!

I’ll try to not make this one of those “been there, done than” posts, but this short post is so much on my mind that I need to get it on paper today, hence the title.

We live in a world of instant gratification, but we don’t want to do what is necessary to go where we need.  If that sounds conflicting, let me discuss in a different manner.

Even though this has been a wonderful business year, I still take time to worry.  What a waste on my part.  Because of my faith I know that worry is of no value.  Consider this scripture in response to my worry:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life ? ...
Matthew 6:24-34

For some of you this will be the first time you have seen this passage.  Whether or not you have a Christian world view, this passage still offers a number of compelling thoughts when it comes to worry.  One of the main causes of worry is procrastination and that is the point of today’s post.

Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today?  I repeat, why wait?  One one hand there is value in thinking things through and planning adequately, but in most cases the reason we do not get things done has nothing to do with planning, but everything to do with angst or worry about the consequences of our actions.  A few examples to consider:

1.  If I call that client they may not want to talk with me.

2.  I’ll give them another day to think about this.

3.  I bet they are really busy today-I’ll call tomorrow.

4.  Maybe I have not waited long enough since my last contact.

The work that I do, the work that you do, is intended to make a difference for others.  If you wait, you are depriving them of the value of what you bring.  Don’t wait-do it today!

The other advantage of doing things today is that it allows for you to do even more tomorrow.  Rather than being overloaded, you are getting things done and becoming more productive.  This tends to make me happier and more content-maybe it will be the same for you.

I would encourage you to make a list of 3-5 things you need to do today and then do them.  If for some reason you cannot finish one of them, put it on top of tomorrow’s list.

Do it today-you will be glad you did.
