Volunteers make the difference
I write this to you today while at the SHRM Volunteer Leadership Summit in Washington, DC. I have been a member of SHRM for over 20 years and have served in some type of volunteer role for SHRM in some capacity for many of those years. The friendships I have gained cannot be measured only in a quantitative sense. The value of those linkages is immeasurable and I am extremely thankful for who I have come to know and how they have been so helpful to me in my professional career.
While I have been a volunteer for many years, this is the first time I have come to this annual event that gathers hundreds of like-minded professionals who seek to advance the HR profession through their association with the world's largest human resources association.
The world of HR continues to shift and some of the key changes I have heard of in general sessions as well as individual conversations include the following:
- keeping pace with advances and changes in the Talent Acquisition world
- providing resources for volunteer leaders to interface with the SHRM headquarters and other volunteers
- finding ways to engage and re-engage more senior HR professionals in activities that are supported by SHRM
- determining the best methods to integrate and leverage technology in the HR profession
I feel fortunate to be part of this group of leaders who seek to make HR and the workplace not only better for today, but also for tomorrow.
Volunteerism is a cornerstone of what has made my life so enriching and rewarding.
