Expanding your Web of Influence
In my previous post we talked about webs of inclusion from the perspective of networks. I shared a diagram showing networking circles and gave a few simple ideas about how to divide up and better leverage your network.
Today’s post will talk more about how you can use tools like LinkedIn and Twitter to expand your influence, grow your webs and add even more webs to your world. Let’s get started.
In order to make this efficient, I will assume you know what LinkedIn is. LI is a tool that will enable you to more quickly find others who are in positions you seek to learn more about or who work in areas that would be of interest to you. Here is what a profile looks like on LI:
Page 1 of the profile shows the overview and the summary. Having a good summary is essential and the summary of others is a good place to learn more about them, their elevator pitch or their executive summary.
Other pages show the work history and interests of the individual.
The real value of LinkedIn comes from using the search function. Here is what the search page looks like:
From this search page you can look for people based on criteria such as the following:
- years of experience
There are many other factors to use that I have not listed here.
Before going to this depth of search, you first need to consider what you are looking for. Answer these questions in order to get started:
- What kind of person am I looking for?
- where do they live?
- what do they do?
- how can they help me?
- what do I have to offer in return?
These questions are good to get started. LinkedIn is not the only tool to use, but it is one of the best to start with.
Twitter is another tool that comes in handy in increasing your webs of inclusion and influence. A twitter profile is shown below:
Twitter has a search function also. This next picture shows what your results would look like doing a simple keyword, Boolean search:
I think these pictures will give you a good idea of what you can do quite easily using both LinkedIn and Twitter.
Let me know how these work for you.
